Take the EPT Online

NOTE:  This website and the EPT will be unavailable due to maintenance on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, from 8:00am-12:00pm.  DO NOT START the EPT on December 6 until after 12:00pm.

DO NOT start the EPT until you read these instructions, or your computer may not run the test:

(1)  Most browsers will run the EPT reading test without problems on a laptop or desktop.

(2)  The EPT writing test may not run well on all browsers.  Firefox tends to work best.  Chrome tends to have problems.  If you have problems with the writing test, switch to a different browser.  Do not try to trouble-shoot a problem test.  Either switch to a different browser, or stop and click the Contact Us link on the upper right.

(3)  Occasionally the EPT audio will crash on one question, and you cannot hear the audio.  If this happens, click the reload button on the browser window.  If reloading does not fix the problem, quit the browser completely using the quit command in the browser menu, then restart both the browser and the test.  You will resume the test with the same amount of time remaining, and the audio should be reset.

(4)  You must DISABLE Grammarly (if installed), or you will not be able to view questions or type accent marks on the EPT Writing test.

(5)  If you want to take the EPT on campus, you may use the public computer labs in either 60 Coffman Union or 135 Jones Hall.

(6)  You may not use a guest ID to take the EPT.  You must have a valid U of M internet ID and password.  If you attempt the EPT with a guest ID, your results will not be recorded or reported.

(7)  If you have a technical problem you cannot fix yourself, click on the Contact Us link in the upper right, then fill out the form to submit a Problem Report.  DO NOT submit a ticket through the central U of M help line.  They CANNOT help you, and your ticket will never reach us.

Results from the EPT reading and listening are posted on our website approximately 2-3 hours after completing the test.  If results show "Incomplete," please check again in an hour.

Results from the EPT writing test will be posted on our website within five business days of completing the test.

WARNING:  You are NOT permitted to use dictionaries, online translators, or any other reference materials during the EPT.  This is a placement test designed to evaluate what you know and place you into the best course for your abilities.  Any evidence of cheating by using translators, dictionaries, or outside help will invalidate your test.  All cheating will be reported to University authorities for disciplinary action.
