Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) and LPE Screening Test

Fall 2021: Check this page and the yellow Update link at langtest.umn.edu regularly for information on the Remote LPE. Capacity may be limited due to 1:1 proctoring of remote tests. Test registration will close early when full.
Remote LPE test sessions are split between listening/reading and writing/speaking. All four parts of the LPE are NOT available remotely in a single test session.
The format of tests (remote vs. in-person on campus) offered during Oct-Dec 2021 will be updated on this page as determined.

When is the LPE normally offered when in-person on campus? (Note that the Remote LPE testing schedule will vary.)
- French, German, and Spanish: at the beginning and end of fall semester, at the beginning and end of spring semester, and once during the summer
- Portuguese: at the beginning and end of fall and the end of spring.
- Somali and Arabic: at the beginning and end of fall and at the beginning and end of spring
- Italian and Korean: end of fall and the end of spring
- Hmong: beginning of fall and beginning of spring
- Hebrew and Japanese: only at the end of spring
- Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, and Swedish: beginning of fall and end of spring
