What is the LPE Screening Test?

To fulfill your CLA second language requirement, you must either (1) earn a C- or better or S in 1004 or (2) pass the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE).

If you are enrolled in or have completed 1001, 1002, 1022, or 1003 and want to try to test out of your language requirement before taking 1004, you must first pass the LPE Screening Test.  The LPE Screening Test is available in French, German, and Spanish.  The LPE Screening Test is intended for students who want to try to test out of their language requirement early and stop taking language courses.  Students in 1003 who want to take 3000-level courses must take 1004.  Students may not skip 1004.  Be sure to read LPE Eligibility for college policies about students taking the LPE early.

There is a charge of $25 to take the Screening Test. There can be no refunds of the Screening Test fee.  If you pass the Screening Test, CLA will administer the LPE to you at no charge.  All 1004 students may take the LPE at the end of 1004 at no charge.

Students must pre-register for the Screening Test during the designated registration period for the test they want to take.  Registration is early in the term.  See Test Dates (on the left) for specific registration dates.

Please note: If you have not taken a course in the language at U of M, you are not eligible for the Screening Test, nor do you need the Screening Test. Please read Which Test Do I Need?

If you have already taken and failed the LPE, you are not eligible for the Screening Test.  Instead you must pass 1004 or the equivalent before retaking the LPE.  Please read about LPE Eligibility.
